meet joxer

my name is david. i use he/him pronouns, i'm queer, and sorry to make you do math, but i've learned that i'll forget to update my age for years at a time and i'll stay frozen at [insert current age] forever if i don't just put my birthyear, so i was born in 2001.

i've been interested in music since i was a kid, but i only started actually recording music at (or just before) 18.

besides writing music, my hobbies include:

and also:

questions: joxer

who's that bear?

that's my teddy bear :) kind of like my mascot.

he'll probably get his own page on this site eventually.

where does the name joxer come from?

it's the name of a character in Xena: Warrior Princess. he's a sweet lovable idiot, don't listen to anyone who tries to tell you otherwise.

how do you pronounce joxer?

this is how you say it in american english:
/ˈdʒɑːksər/ pronunciation
like "boxer", but with a j as in "jump".

i don't really care how you say it, but a few people have asked if it's supposed to be pronounced "joker", and i just want to clarify that it isn't.

does the capitalization of joxer matter?

i'm not super picky about it, but ideally it'd either be all caps or all lowercase (with all lowercase preferred). to me Joxer is the Xena character, not me.

do you wish you'd picked a more searchable name?

yes. but it could be worse. i could just be David.

what do you use to make music?

i use fl studio. i used to use soundtrap but they removed the ability to make endless accounts for endless free trials so i stopped being able to afford it lol. fl studio is much more capable anyway. but if you're wondering why my music started sounding really different in like 2023 that's why.

who makes your cover art?

with very few exceptions, cover art is either drawn by me, drawn by a friend, or edited from stock images. more info is usually available on the album pages.

can i use your music for [insert thing here]?

generally yes, as long as you give me credit & it's not something you think i'd disagree with on principle (like ben shapiro fancams and ads for sports betting). but please ask anyway. i'll probably say yes, & it makes me feel good :) and i'd like to see what you make.

questions: david

what kind of music do you like?

people hate when you say this, but a little of everything. there are definitely things i like more than others though. i'd say my favorite genres/scenes are hip hop, hyperpop, visual kei, and vaporwave.

which specific musicians do you like?

i listen to a lot of music so it's just not possible to answer this question concisely. but i'll try. dotted underline means you can hover over it (or tap on mobile) for more info.

there's no particular order to that table. just as i thought of them.

what about video games?

this is a much easier question!

at the time of writing this, i'm obsessed with Rhythm Heaven (Fever & Groove) and WarioWare. i go through pretty intense phases of playing a ton of Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing. i've also been playing a ton of Yakuza/Like a Dragon and Silent Hill.

i might not mean this, but i think my favorite game ever is Hypnospace Outlaw.

how about tv?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (and its spinoff Angel) and Xena: Warrior Princess (and its main show Hercules: The Legendary Journeys).

there are others but those are the main ones. they're my favorite shows of all time.

books?

i promise you don't want book recommendations from me. you do have to read Because Internet by Gretchen McCulloch, though.

questions: website

what font is this?

this is a font i made myself based on my irl handwriting. i made it in mspaint in 2022 or so.

there's also a lowercase variant that i don't use as much, because irl i almost always write in small-caps, but sometimes it's necessary. i like to use it for tracklists and stuff.

did you make this website? how?

yep :) i coded everything "myself" in notepad++. and by "myself", i mean with the very heavy instruction of w3schools and randos online (thank you stackoverflow). i'm still pretty new to html/css and i'm extremely new to javascript, so i needed a lot of help. but like, it was mostly me, i think.

did you draw all the icons and stuff?

i did :) i don't really draw anymore but i like to doodle. i made them in mspaint with my mouse. you're free to use them on your own site, if you want, but they're pretty specialized so i don't know why you'd want to.

how is this website hosted?

joxerweb lives on neocities.

whose voice is that in the pronunciation guides?

that's justin from ipa-reader. i'll probably re-record everything myself eventually.
